Research, and figure out what type of gun to make. Google and other search engines are great for finding reference, unless following concept art.
Put the side view of the weapon on a box, polygon plane or in the background of the modeling tool.
Quickly shape out the weapon to get the basic shape, and don't worry about small detail. Be sure it looks good zoomed out, not in. I drew the outline of each section as a flat polygon, then extruded out the shape. For the clip, I took a small section of a primitive torus.
More create the polygon shape and extrude here. Because it follows the reference, it looks pretty good. The barrel was created with a primitive cylinder that I segmented and extruded the details out of. The smaller details on the body were extruded in from the main body shape.
With more reference and practice, getting the 3d shape shouldn't be a problem. I made this one wider than the real gun, adding bulk to improve the in-game look.
