There are many techniques for creating a low poly character. This tutorial covers using primitive shapes to create the character is different pieces.
Starting with a segmented cylinder, I grab each segment, scale and rotate to form the shapes, such as wrist, forearm, bicept, tricept and shoulder. From there I extruded out a fist, added a few edges to build the elbow and cleaned up the shoulder.
Same process as with the arm, select edges, scale and rotate to form shape. I extruded out the foot and crotch as shown, then mirrored the model to form both legs.
Again, the same select, scale and rotate process, also cleaning out a few extra edges.
For the head I smoothed a box a couple of times, pulled down the jaw, pulled up the forehead, and move up the back of the head. Next, I split edges to create the eyes, nose and mouth. Finally I added a bit more definition to the cheeks, nose and mouth with edge spliting, and extruded out the ear.
Finally, putting all these parts together for a full character. At this point, I make a few adjustments for all the pieces to look right as one.
This character still needs plenty of work before he's ready to go in a game. More on that coming soon.
